Home Improvement Projects You Should Do in January

After months of anticipation – shopping, parties, family, and friends – the holiday season is over and winter is finally setting in here in central Virginia. The cold weather coupled with shorter days brings most of us inside to hibernate. Like many of us, you might be feeling a little “blue” in the doldrums of winter so why not use the time you spend inside to make home improvements to your interior spaces to create more energy?

Our favorite home improvement ideas.

1) Splashin’ Around!

Blue design bathroom wall backsplash

For many people, simple upgrades like a brand-new tile backsplash in the kitchen can lift our mood and inspire us to cook or entertain with take out! Imagine having just a few friends over to show off your newest creation, the backsplash of your dreams. Here are a few beauties to get you thinking. https://hmm.surfaces.net/  Psst, we’re installing the Aspen White Chevron backsplash with light grey grout in our office for a fresh new look for the year!

And we can also do tile shower surrounds over your tub or complete tile showers if you’re so inspired!

We can install any of these tile projects turnkey for you, just let us know what you like and we’ll measure, order and then install while you sit on the couch and watch another HGTV rerun. multi patterned kitchen sink backsplash

2) Let there be Light!

Changing out your bathroom or kitchen lighting fixtures can enhance your mood and adding a dimmer switch makes it ever better. Imagine sconces flanking the mirror or an overhead surface mount drum light with a little bling. We love Wayfair for lighting selections and with generally free shipping, let your mouse run free to find a fixture that inspires you!

Handyman Matters can install your new light fixtures (and dimmer switches) usually in just a short hours and then you’ll be basking in the new glow!

3) Spirit Lifting Color!

While neutrals are fabulous for selling your home (grey), a bolder pop of color can enhance the mood of any room, and its residents. Pantone’s color of the year for 2018 is“greenery”. It’s breath of spring fresh air and can be used with neutrals, ocean inspired blues, or just about any pallet to lift your spirits. According to the Pantone Color Institute’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman, Greenery represents “refreshment, rejuvenation and rebirth”. Sounds like what the doctor ordered for the winter doldrums!

Handyman Matters’ expert craftsmen can help you with painting one accent wall or a few rooms. You pick the colors and let us do the rest!

4) Right On Trend Reclaimed Accent Wall

If you’re a big fan of HGTV you may have seen reclaimed barn wood or pallet wood used to enhance the mood of a room, usually as an accent wall such as over the bed, in the living or dining rooms or even as a kitchen backsplash or island surround. We even used it in our showroom offices as a unique design feature! This product is available in six color varieties sure to impress your friends and family – and it’s a makeover that won’t break the bank.

Handyman Matters professional craftsmen can help you with an almost instant upgrade to your room in about a day!

5. A Little Mirror Magic

no mirror frame vs a wood mirror frame

A naked plate glass mirror feels like a day without your jewelry. And dressing it up couldn’t be any easier with a mirror frame. Transform your bathroom easily and affordably without removing the mirror. We have over 65 frame styles and colors to choose from and after measuring your mirror and spacing around, we can order and install your mirror frame in less than two weeks. It even covers the de-silvering around the edges or corners. This is a simple change that will add WOW to your powder room, guest bath or master bath.
