Richmond’s Fall To-Do List
How to prepare your home before winter.
Make Exterior Repairs
Take a walk around your property, looking for signs of damage to the roof, siding, and foundation. If you spot anything that needs repair, schedule it before winter weather hits.
Check Your Detectors
With furnaces turned on, the windows closed and portable heaters humming along, fall is a great time to make sure your smoke and CO detectors are working. Check batteries and expiration dates – smoke detectors are typically good for 10 years, and CO detectors last for about six years.
Caulk Around Windows & Doors
If the gap is bigger than the width of a nickel, you need to reapply exterior caulk. Check window glazing putty, too (which seals glass into the window frame). Add weatherstripping as needed around doors, making sure you cannot see any daylight from inside your home.
